Onkwehon:we Midwifery Training Program
2019 was a groundbreaking year for us, as we welcomed our inaugural class of midwifery students to our Onkwehon:we Midwifery Training Program. A unique program in Akwesasne, the training program consists of five years dedicated to the study of midwifery in an indigenous context. Using a living classroom model, students study the topics of Midwifery, Intrapartum, Anatomy & Physiology, Holistic Wellness & Counselling Skills combined with Traditional and Cultural Teachings and Kanien’keha (Mohawk) Language classes. Our mission is to train highly skilled and culturally aware Onkwehon:we Midwives that can go forth in their communities and facilitate the growth of new generations of indigenous people.
