What is the Kontiwiró:kwas Midwifery Training Program?
OMC saw the development of an Indigenous midwifery training program as an important step in ensuring the health and cultural sustainability of Akwesasne. It was designed to preserve cultural traditions, improve health outcomes, empower community members and address healthcare disparities.
Our Onkwehón:we midwifery training program empowers community members to take control of their own healthcare and become leaders in the healthcare field. Our 4-step, 121-credit, training program allows students to gain certifications upon completion of each step, developing skills that will help support the Akwesasne community and prevent poor health outcomes.
This Akwesasne-based program contributes to the sustainability of midwifery within the community by building local capacity and expertise. Offered in a hybrid, self-paced format, this program allows for accessibility and flexibility in completing your midwifery journey.
Program Format
Hybrid Programming at Your Own Pace
Our Midwifery Training Program operates in a hybrid format, with the didactic component completed online and asynchronously. Any quizzes, testing and clinical components will be proctored through an online proctoring software or be completed in-person.
The program was designed to be completed in a standard 4-year time frame, however, it can also be completed in a part-time manner and at your own pace.
Tuition & Fees
Tuition for the program is based on the number of credit hours in which you are enrolled.
The cost per credit hour is $330 CAD (subject to change). This translates to $4,950 per 15-credit semester course load.
Other Fees:
Books: Up to $800/year
Supplies/Equipment: $500/year
Additional costs such as childcare, travel, room & board are at the discretion of the student.

Admissions Process & Requirements
Admissions Requirements:
- Proof of Indigenous status
- Highschool Diploma or GED (tentative grades accepted for those in the process of completion)
- An average of 80 in the last 4 years of schooling with at least a 75 on our Entrance Exam OR an average of 70 in the last 4 years of schooling with an 85 on the Entrance Exam
- At least 80% in English (Writing or Composition accepted), Biology, Chemistry, and Social Studies or Humanities course taken in the last 10 years.
- CPR/First Aid strongly suggested prior to course enrollment
- Clean CPIC/Vulnerable Sector/Criminal Background Check
- 3 Letters of Recommendation
Admissions Process:
- Make sure all basic requirements for admissions are met.
- Book a time to meet with the admissions team via our JaneApp site. Meetings are only 15 minutes long and go over admissions criteria, application help, and answering any questions that you may have. - Submit application through OMC's JaneApp site and pay $125 application fee by cheque or e-transfer. (Please email shekon@onkwehonwemidwives.com if you would like to pay in USD).
- Submit 3 letters of recommendation, plus any transcripts, report cards, certifications, and clean background check to shekon@onkwehonwemidwives.com.
- Monitor email for possible Interview; meeting will be scheduled with Interview Committee.
- Decision letters will be emailed to you.
