Name: Karen Elaine Loran
Clan: Bear
Position: Vice President of the OMC Board of Directors
I have lived in this Community for 62 years. I have a husband two daughters and two fur babies. I have been very blessed to raise such a beautiful family in this community. I am a graduate of SUNY Potsdam with a BA degree in History and Education.
I was a teacher for the Akwesasne Mohawk Board of Education for nine years starting in 2000 to 2009. I was a Tsi Snaihne District Chief for nine years starting in 2009-2018 for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. I currently work as the Front Desk Receptionist for Iohahi:io Akwesasne Education Training Inistitute (IAETI) since 2019. I am also the Chair for the Akwesasne Membership Board since 2019.
During my political tenure I held the Health Portfolio for nine years. This is where I was introduce to Jasmine Benedict on her initiative and vision for the Onkwehón:we Midwives Collective. I have supported her initiative and advocated to the best of my abilities throughout my political terms.
I was approached by Jasmine when I ended my political career with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne in 2018. I was very please when she asked if I would be interested and considered to sit on the Board of Directors as a member. I believe my background and nine years of experience with the Health ministries on the federal and provincial tables contributed to what I could bring to the table of the Board of Directors.
It has been a pleasure to be part of the Board of Directors and watch this initiative and vision flourishing while sitting on this Board. The staff are very professional and pleasure to work with in our meetings. I enjoy the OMC newsletter and reading about all the exciting programs and events for the clients and the community. My only hopes and expectations for the OMC is to see a facility here in Akwesasne.
